Welcome to the Lord of the Flies Wiki!

Here you will fin the reading guide from the library website, with multimedia documents that will accompany you to help you understand the text and/or deepen your reflection on the different elements that appear throughout the text.

As we are reading the book, you will take notes and discuss the symbols and characters you were assigned with your group. Fill out the table in the corresponding page for each of these. Make sure you include the name of the person who identified the quote in the first column, then the quote itself (you can paraphrase if you are referring to a long scene) and the page number in the second column, and in the final column your analysis of the chosen quote.

As you follow the development of your motifs and characters, observing, connecting, interpreting and discussing their development throughout the book, you will leave at least one comment per session in your analysis table, listed below. Over the course of the unit, you will also be “visiting” tables from other teams. You will leave at least one comment for each motif and character other than your own. Dialogue is encouraged!

Topics for Discussion

Human Nature: Good or Evil?

To start with, read this extract of an article reflecting on the 9/11 events and on human nature. After reading, think about the following questions about your own beliefs:
- Do you think human nature is good or evil?
- What role do you think society plays on good and evil?

Dystopian fiction

After your initial discussion on the text, look at this definition of DYSTOPIA. Can you identify elements of dystopian fiction so far in the text? Read this article by Moira Young, a young adult fiction author, about why young adults tend to enjoy dystopian fiction. What does she base this claim on, and to what extent do you agree with her?
